The Niels Henrik Abel Board and the International Mathematical Union invite applications from mathematicians professionally based in developing countries to visit an international research collaborator for a period of one month. The period is extendable for up to three months in the case of matching support from the host institution. KAAD Scholarships for Developing Countries’ Students in Germany, 2013

Applications are open for well known KAAD Scholarships for students of developing countries. Each year, these scholarships are awarded to students for pursuing master’s degree, PhD or for a post-doctoral research project (2-6 months for established university lecturers) at a German university. There is no specific subject-preference. Applicants have to request through filling a questionnaire and sending it to the KAAD offices for applying these scholarships. Applications for the September selection need to be complete by end of June.

Study Subject(s): There is no specific subject-preference. However, the selection board has often given preference to courses and subjects that they felt to be of significance for the home country of the applicant. This holds true especially for subjects of PhD-theses. There is therefore a certain leaning towards “development oriented” studies – this does however not mean that other fields (cultural, philosophic, linguistic, etc.) cannot be of significance for a country and are ruled out.

Scholarship Description: The KAAD Scholarship Program 1 is addressed to post-graduates and to academics who already gained professional experience and who are interested in postgraduate studies (or research stays) in Germany. This program is administered by regional partner committees, staffed by university professors and church representatives. Normally documents are submitted to the committee of the applicant’s home country.

How to Apply: The first request is placed through filling the application questionnaire and sending it to the KAAD offices. Normally documents are submitted to the committee of the applicant’s home country. In the course of the application process, more documents need to be provided by the applicant and the KAAD-Partner-Committees are involved. If the pre-selection process has been positive for the applicant, the application is passed on to an independent selection board, which sits twice per year (in March and in September).

Scholarship Application Deadline: Applications for the September selection need to be complete by end of June. Many times, applicants get admission letters (especially for Master-courses)only when these deadlines have passed. In these cases, the university has to be asked to defer the admission to the next academic year. Applications can be made already before admission letters are received. However at the end of the application process, the applicant needs to show either an admission letter or a confirmation by the university that they are eligible for the course and that the application has been received and being processed.

New Zealand Development Scholarships for Developing Countries, 2013/2014

New Zealand Development Scholarships are well known scholarships which are awarded each year by New Zealand Government. The scholarships are offered for the students of developing countries to pursue postgraduate study in specific subject areas which will assist in the development of applicant’s home country. The scholarships provide financial support for tuition, living costs while in New Zealand and airfares for the duration of the study programme. Awardees are required to return to their home country for at least two years after the completion of their scholarship. The partners of students are eligible for a work visa that allows them to live and work in New Zealand for the duration of their partner’s study.
Selection Criteria:New Zealand Development Scholarships will be awarded in the priority sectors requiring human resource capacity enhancement in the southern and eastern Africa region. In addition to the eligibility criteria above, candidates’ applications will be considered against the following selection criteria:
-the proposed study programme links to one of the identified priority development sectors for Africa (see page 1);
-the applicant clearly demonstrates the developmental relevance and applicability of their proposed study programme to the human resource development training needs of their country;
-applicants for postgraduate study must hold a recognised Bachelors degree of strong academic merit, relevant to the proposed postgraduate qualification. (Note: The New Zealand Aid Programme gives preference to candidates who do not already hold a degree from a developed country);
-the applicant clearly demonstrates their links and commitment to their home country (e.g. services to their community, ability to influence change in a key development sector, etc), supported by references. The proposed study programme must be relevant to:
-recent paid and/or unpaid (volunteer) work experience ;
-the training needs of the employing organisation; and
-identified employment opportunities on completion of their study;
-consideration of gender equity, including efforts to ensure the scholarships are offered equitably between male and female candidates; and
-consideration of other factors which will contribute to the success of their studies (e.g. good character, positive study attitude and motivation to succeed.
Notification: The New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade will advise the institution of the outcome by late September.
The education institution will inform successful candidates by late September, and then assist them with their travel arrangements to New Zealand.
How to Apply: NZDS candidates apply directly to one of the participating New Zealand education institutions after ensuring that they meet the NZDS eligibility criteria. The education institution distributes and receives NZDS application forms. In order for the application to be considered, applicants must:
-Complete an NZDS application form (also available from a New Zealand Embassy, or New Zealand education institutions);

World Bank, with funding from the Government of Japan offers Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarships Program(JJ/WBGSP) for nationals of a World Bank member countries. Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent and born after March 31, 1973. The scholarship provides benefits for the recipient only, covering: economy class air travel between the home country and the host university at the start of the study program and one return journey following the end of the overall scholarship period. In addition to the ticket, scholars receive a US $500 travel allowance for each trip; tuition and the cost of basic medical and accident insurance usually obtained through the university; a monthly subsistence allowance to cover living expenses, including books.
